InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the InterContinental Sofia hotel, the first property for the brand in Bulgaria.

Opening next year, the 182-room hotel will be operated under a management agreement with InterHotel Grand – Hotel Sofia.

It will include seven meeting rooms and five boardrooms, a lobby bar, a spa and fitness centre, and a rooftop restaurant.

Situated in the centre of Sofia overlooking the Alexandar Nevski Cathedral, InterContinental Sofia will have easy access to the National Theatre, as well as local shops, boutiques and restaurants.

IHG Europe chief development officer Robert Shepherd said: "We’re delighted to have signed our first InterContinental Hotel in Bulgaria, in the very heart of Sofia’s city centre.

"The signing of this hotel demonstrates the momentum of our iconic luxury brand in key international cities and resorts.

IHG’s luxury brand, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts currently has 184 branches across the world. The company has 52 InterContinental Hotels & Resorts properties in the pipeline.

It owns 32 hotels in Europe, with five further properties under development.

Recently, IHG entered into a management agreement with Proud Resort Phuket to develop its first project in Phuket, Thailand.

Last month, the group opened its InterContinental London – The O2 branch in London.
