The Plaza

Hanwha Hotels & Resorts brand’s The Plaza in Korea is set to join Marriott International‘s Autograph Collection Hotels.

The new alliance will become effective in early 2016. It will allow The Plaza to benefit from Marriott’s global sales and marketing channels, Marriott Rewards customer loyalty programme, and its management and franchise expertise.

Marriott International Asia Pacific president Craig Smith said: "Autograph Collection is a one-of-a-kind ensemble of independent hotels that we are fast expanding in Asia.

"Africa is important to Marriott International’s growth strategy because of its rapid economic growth, growing middle class and youth population."

"The Plaza, with its rich heritage and special location as well as its quality service, will enable travellers to experience the charm of the city in style, truly fitting the brand promise of the Autograph Collection."

The nearby sites of The Plaza include Deoksugung Palace, Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate and the hotel is also close to financial institutions and corporations.

In 2010, The Plaza renovated its 410 rooms, featuring eco-friendly design materials, free wired and wireless internet access and a smart touchpad to control room temperature, lighting and other amenities.

In another development, Marriott International signed two new properties in South Africa, in partnership with the Amdec Group.

The 150-room Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and 200-unit Marriott executive apartments Johannesburg Melrose Arch are expected to open by February 2018.

These two properties will be the first Marriott-branded properties under development in South Africa.

Marriott International Middle East and Africa president Alex Kyriakidis said: "Africa is important to Marriott International’s growth strategy because of its rapid economic growth, growing middle class and youth population, as well as the expansion of international flights onto the continent."

According to Marriott, the company has become largest hotel operator in Africa after the acquisition of Protea Hotels in 2014. The company is planning to expand from ten African countries to 18 over the next five years.
