The hotel development pipeline in the Middle East and Africa for September 2011 comprised 481 hotels totalling 130,479 rooms, according to STR’s Global Construction Pipeline Report.

STR Global managing director Elizabeth Randall said 4,390 rooms were added to the total active pipeline since August.

The region has 36,205 rooms in the pipeline for 2012 and 29,260 rooms planned for 2013.

For the year-to-date 2011, nearly 50 hotels opened with 9,663 rooms, and the region expects 69 more hotels with 15,420 rooms to open by the end of the year.

The unaffiliated segment is expected to open 4,408 rooms during the remainder of 2011, followed by the upper upscale segment with 3,733 rooms and the luxury segment with 3,052 rooms.

During 2012, the luxury segment will open 11,123 rooms and the upper upscale segment will open 10,198 rooms.
