The construction of the Madinat Jumeirah resort, located in Dubai, was begun in 2002 and was finished in early 2004. The development was expected to cost $340m. It is operated by Jumeirah International.

The resort covers 40ha of land, featuring two five-star hotels: Port Al. Salam and Al. Qasr. It is located adjacent to Burj Al Arab and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, stretching across 1km of the Jumeirah beach. Due to its close proximity to the three flagship hotels in Dubai, it should benefit from their worldwide recognition. It is a fully themed complex, incorporating the history and culture of the region.

Resort features include: various types of five star accomodation incorporating 940 rooms and suites, a fully equipped convention centre, a cultural village, the largest spa and fitness centre in the region and a tradional trading Souq as well as an extensive range of restuarants and dining facilities.

The various aspects of the resort are connected by 3km of waterways, offering fully operational abras (water taxis).

HOTELS AND VILLAS

Madinat Jumeirah features two five star hotels: Port Al. Salam and Al. Qasr. Each hotel offers 300 rooms in addition to clusters of 340 rooms and suites in courtyard villas in the resort, offering authentic architecture reflecting the heritage and culture of the Arabian region.

Port Al. Salam was completed by mid 2003. It is a multi-level hotel that includes public areas, restaurants, plantrooms and a 218-space basement car park. The design of the hotel is intended to reflect a Gulf Arab summer palace.

The hotels are surrounded by 200,000m² of landscaped garden where the villas are located in 31 separate blocks; each block contains ten villas.

SPA AND FITNESS CENTRE

The resort features the largest spa in the region. The spa and fitness centre incorporates several swimming pools and recreational facilities. It also offers 22 private suites and treatment rooms, including 11 massage rooms specialising in European and Asian relaxation therapies and treatments, as well as traditional style steam rooms and baths.

DINING FACILITIES

An array of dining facilities are offered throughout the resort, resort gardens and souk, including 36 restaurants, teahouses, shisha cafes and bars. Most of the facilities feature regional cuisine.

CULTURAL VILLAGE, MUSEUM, AMPHITHEATRE AND SOUK

Together, the cultural village and Souk, located in the resort, incorporates 120 shops, cafes and restaurants. This is intended to promote the traditional trading culture, offering gold, spices, pearls, fabrics and curios for sale.

The cultural village and museum providestraditional activities, demonstrations and shows on a daily basis. At the centre of the development, there is 1,000 seat ampitheatre that will additionally feature a variety of entertainment events.

MEETING AND CONVENTION FACILITIES

The Madinat Jumeirah includesmodern, comprehensive meeting and convention facilities, covering 9,000ft². The convention centre in the resort is capable of catering for a range of events: conferences, banquets, weddings and product launches.

A 2,000ft² ballroom incorporates the architecture and Arabic heritage of the region. The ballroom has the seating capacity for 1,400 guests. Also on offer is a range of smaller function rooms.

WATERWAYS

Although guests are able to commute around the resort in more conventional manners, such as by vehicle, golf cart and walkway, the resort also features 3km of waterways with abbras (water taxis). This is in an effort to recreate the old creek water frontage ambience.

The abbras are able to ferry guests from the rooms to the various features of the hotel, including restaurants, beaches and entertainment facilities.

CONTRACTORS

The development was contracted to Al. Habtoor and Murray & Roberts as a joint venture. Africon, along with a consortium of others, provided planning, design of all wet services, as well as storage, pumping and treatment facilities.

Additionally, it supplied the structural design of the hotel buildings. The resort is run by Jumeirah International.
