Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) has stepped up inspections over the last two months at hotels, retail and leisure venues to ensure compliance with Covid-19 precautionary measures.

Dubai Tourism, along with other key authorities, carried out almost 10,000 inspections of hotels and recreational facilities.

During the inspections, a total of 274 violations were recorded, and subsequently 47 facilities were closed. According to the tourism authority, a compliance rate of 89% was achieved.

Following the reopening of the city for domestic tourists in May 2020 and international tourists in July 2020, Dubai Tourism claimed that it has embraced a “zero-tolerance approach” to non-compliance with the health protocols.

Among the penalties for violations imposed by the authority range from fines to final warnings, permit suspensions and facility closures.

The UAE has seen an increase in new Covid-19 cases since the beginning  of this year.

A host of Covid-19 precautionary measures rolled out on 2 February in Dubai was recently extended until the beginning of Ramadan in April.

These new regulations encompass several sectors and activities with shopping malls, hotel establishments mandated to operate at 70%  capacity.

Indoor venues such as cinemas and sports facilities, will operate at 50% capacity, while pubs and bars will continue to remain closed until mid-April.

Besides inspections, Dubai Tourism also rolled out ‘Dubai Assured’ stamp in 2020 in collaboration with Dubai Economy and Dubai Municipality to certify hotels, retail and other establishments that have shown compliance with health and safety protocols.
