Marriott International has signed agreements to develop five new hotels as part of its expansion plans across Africa.

These agreements are part of the company’s plans to increase its portfolio by 50% with more than 200 hotels and 38,000 rooms by 2023. The expansion is expected to create 12,000 new jobs.

The new hotels will expand the company’s presence in Ghana, Kenya, Morocco and South Africa as well as allows it to enter Mozambique.

According to Marriott, the five new projects will boost investment of more than $250m by the property owners.

Marriott International Middle East and Africa president and managing director Alex Kyriakidis said: “Today we are seeing strong owner interest in our brands, backed by our combined loyalty program, the collective strength of our global platform and our highly-experienced, local teams.

“African economies have sustained unprecedented rates of growth, which have mainly been driven by a strong domestic demand, improved macroeconomic management and increased political stability.

In addition, the hospitality major is planning to expand its presence into new markets such as Benin, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Mozambique and Senegal.

The company will also introduce AC by Marriott brand into Africa with the opening of a 188-room AC by Marriott Cape Town hotel later this year.

Marriott has plans to open its AC by Marriott Umhlanga Ridge hotel in Kwazulu Natal, Durban in 2023. This hotel will include 205 rooms and be part of a mixed-use development project consisting of offices and residential apartments.

The company intends to launch some of its other brands such as  Aloft Hotels, Element, Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn by Marriott, in Africa. Some of these hotels are already under development.

Last week, Marriott International announced the opening of the dual-branded AC Hotel Austin and The Otis Hotel, an Autograph Collection hotel, in Austin, Texas.
