Qatar has launched a guidance tool to promote fair recruitment and employment in the hospitality sector.

According to a Gulf Times report, the guidance called ‘Promoting Fair Recruitment and Employment: Guidance Tool for Hotels in Qatar’ was published by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA).

It is developed in consultation with human resources managers from more than 40 hotels in the country and seeks to help the hotel companies in addressing labour rights challenges by implementing appropriate policies.

The hospitality sector is one of the growing industry in Qatar, which has one of the largest natural gas and oil reserves in the world.

The number of hotel employees in the country has nearly doubled from 11,451 in 2010 to 21,515 in 2018.

The government also anticipates several new hotel opening in the next two years as Qatar is scheduled to host the Football World Cup in 2022.

The guidance book foreword said: “This Guidance Tool is intended to help hotel companies in Qatar promote labour rights and fair recruitment in their business practices as part of wider efforts to strengthen a competitive and responsible hospitality industry.”

The guidance primarily covers three topics, namely- Defining company priorities and expectations; Due diligence guidance; and Improving workplace relations.

This comes amid Covid-19 pandemic, which was significantly affected the hospitality sector.

As of 18 September, Qatar has reported more than 122,000 Covid-19 cases and 208 deaths.

In May, Qatar-based hotel developer and operator Katara Hospitality announced discount packages for guests to boost occupancy.
