Clarion Hotel Stockholm in Sweden will begin a four-month trial for a project that involves replacing hotel room keys with near field communication (NFC) enabled mobile phones.

ASSA ABLOY, Choice Hotels Scandinavia, TeliaSonera, VingCard Elsafe and Venyon are working on the project.

Using NFC phones guests can check in and receive their room key directly onto their mobile phones before arriving at the hotel.

Guests can also access other services through their phones and, on departure, can use the phone to check out.

The technology also increases security and if a mobile phone is lost access credentials can be revoked remotely and then reissued.

Following the completion of the trial the company plans to enhance and expand services to other hotels.

Assa Abloy is a provider of opening solutions and TeliaSonera is a telecommunications provider in Nordic and Baltic countries.

VingCard Elsafe provides guestroom security for hotel door locks and in-room safes in the hospitality industry while Venyon provides trusted service manager services to the NFC eco-system.
