Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is to expand its Sheraton brand in China during 2011, representing 30% of the company’s total development pipeline.

The hotel group will open 25 new hotels in 2011 of which 16 are located in China. These include its fourth hotel in Shanghai, its second in Beijing and its first two hotels in Guangzhou.

Sheraton accounts for 50% of Starwood hotels under development in China, bringing Starwood close to its target of operating 100 hotels in the country by the end of 2012.

Sheraton will also open its first five-star property in Bangalore, India, in 2011.

As Starwood’s largest brand, Sheraton has a portfolio of more than 400 hotels in 72 countries.

Following the completion of its $6bn brand-wide revitalisation programme, Sheraton will spend another $5bn to add more than 50 new hotels to its portfolio by the end of 2013.
