A New York hotel will become the first in the world to install technology that allows guests to charge their electronic devices without connecting to a mains power supply.

The Loews Regency Hotel Business Centre says Powermat’s mat technology, developed by an Israeli firm of the same name, will provide their guests with the most advanced technology available.

Powermat utilises the principles of magnetic induction to transmit electrical power via an ultra-thin mat embedded in, or overlaid on, a work surface or wall to electronic devices placed upon it.

It will allow guests to travel without chargers and will eliminate the need for multiple power points and excessive cords in conference rooms.

Neither Powermat nor the hotel would comment on how much the technology will cost or when it is expected to be installed.
