Tanzania is working with local hotel owners to upgrade and develop properties to stimulate growth in the country's tourist industry, tourism officials say. Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Jumanne Maghembe says Tanzania faces an acute shortage of hotels rooms for foreign visitors.

Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Jumanne Maghembe says Tanzania faces an acute shortage of hotels rooms for foreign visitors.

He says strategies to deal with the problem include helping local hotel owners secure loans from finance firms to fund upgrades.

“We are going to do that in collaboration with the Government of France,” he says.

“In Serengeti National Park, for example, we want to increase the number of hotel rooms from the current 940 to 4,500.”
