Hotels in South Florida, US, experienced a rise in occupancy, despite the shadow of the British Petroleum (BP) oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Occupancy across the US grew to 60.2%, according to data from Smith Travel Research for the week ending 15 May.

Hotel occupancy in Miami's Dade County rose to 68.6% compared with last year while occupancy in Broward rose to 60.4% and Palm Beach to 57%.
