Hotels in Spain experienced a 1% rise in occupancy levels in April despite the effects of the volcanic cloud crisis that gripped Europe last month.

According to data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), occupancy by international guests increased by 0.1% while occupancy from Spanish residents rose by 2%.

The hotel industry also posted a decline in foreign visitors of 13% in April compared with the same period last year.

Hotel residency increased by a total of 3.5% in the first four months of the year aided by a 3.1% fall in prices, according to the Xinhua news agency.
