Indian Hotels Company (ITC), a Tata Group firm, is to spend Rs7bn ($143m) adding 22 new hotels under the Gateway Hotels and Resorts brand by 2015.

Gateway Hotels chief operating officer PK Mohankumar said the company will first develop new Gateway hotels in all of India’s largest cities, the first of which will open in early 2012.

The new properties, with 3,000 rooms currently under construction, will give ITC a total of 5,000 rooms within the next four years; each hotel will feature 150-200 rooms.

Ten hotels are under management contracts and 12 will be greenfield projects, which are expected to be operational by 2014.
