Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has announced the launch of the first of two phases of its mobile application (app) for iPhone, in a bid to provide better access and booking for its 72 hotels and resorts.

The new app is a natural extension of the brand’s recently redesigned website and will include all the features of the website’s functions, said the hotel operator.

According to Hong Kong-based Shangri-La, the free app, which is available for download through the app store in English or simplified Chinese, has been developed to maximise the features of the existing smartphone technology.

With the help of the new mobile app, guests can search and book real-time reservations at all Shangri-La hotel locations, view all promotions and receive offers that are location-based at specific hotels with global positioning system (GPS) technology.

The app will let users book, view and edit room reservations at Shangri-La, Traders and Kerry hotels and resorts, and redeem points for complimentary stays and dining and spa vouchers.

Users can get travel tips and read and share travel stories with Golden Circle members; they can also retrieve offers at Shangri-La hotels with the built-in QR code scanner.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts director of corporate loyalty and partner marketing Wee Kee Ng said the company offers free Wi-Fi in all areas of the group’s hotels, including the guestrooms, public areas, restaurants, lounges and function areas, as part of its global mobile strategy.

"All these initiatives will empower our guests and members by allowing full engagement with our hotels at their convenience," Ng added.

Plans are already in progress for the second phase of the app, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2013.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently owns and/or manages 72 hotels under the Shangri-La, Kerry and Traders brands covering a room inventory of over 30,000.
