Westin Hotels & Resorts has begun construction on a $37m hotel in Wilmington, US, set to open in early 2014.
The ten-storey Westin Wilmington hotel, connected to the 87,000ft² Chase Center on the Riverfront, will feature 180 rooms, a pool, a restaurant and bar, meeting space, a fitness centre, a law centre, among other facilities.
The hotel’s construction is being privately funded, and it will be managed by BPG’s affiliate Pollin Miller Hospitality Strategies.
BPG’s Dave Pollin said the planned property will support area businesses and welcome visitors to Wilmington.
"We look forward to creating hundreds of construction and permanent jobs, enhancing the region’s tax base and welcoming our first guests in early 2014," Pollin added.
Upon completion, the Westin Wilmington, which is expected to generate $3.9m in state and city tax revenues in its first three years, will employ 123 people.
The Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware (RDC) board approved the $3m sale of a .75-acre parcel of land to The Buccini/Pollin Group (BPG) for the proposed hotel.
RDC approved a $3m loan guarantee to the organisation backed by a mortgage on the Chase Center, while the City of Wilmington provided a $1m loan guarantee for the project.
According to RDC, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified hotel will be Wilmington’s first full-service property in nearly 20 years.
Westin Hotels & Resorts, owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, has more than 186 hotels and resorts in nearly 40 countries and territories.
