The US’s total active hotel development pipeline for March 2011 fell by 8.2% to 3,095 projects comprising 325,407 rooms, compared with the same month last year, according to the March 2011 STR / McGraw Hill Construction Dodge Pipeline Report.

The total active pipeline data includes projects in the construction, final planning and planning stages, but does not include projects in the pre-planning stage.

Among the top ten largest hotel markets, New York City leads the list with 6,763 rooms under construction, an increase of 7%.

Orlando and Washington DC both had more than 2,600 rooms under construction, an increase of more than 2%.

Orlando reported the largest year-on-year increase of rooms in the construction phase with a 108% rise.

Houston, Texas, had the largest year-on-year fall in rooms under construction at 75% with 680 rooms.
