Starwood Hotels & Resorts is to invest Rs10bn ($220m) in opening ten Star Hotels across India.

Five of the properties will launch before 2014 under Starwood’s Aloft brand. Locations for the hotels were identified by UrbanEdge Hotels, a partnership company between Apollo Global Management and Auromatrix Hotels, which owns the Aloft brand.

The company will open one hotel in Chandigarh in September and another in Ahmedabad by October.

Starwood director of operations Vivek Bhalla said that there is a demand / supply imbalance of hotel rooms in India, particularly in tier-II cities, which the group wants to tap, according to PTI.

Auromatrix Hotels managing director Udday Kumar Krishnan said the first Aloft hotel was launched in Chennai in July last year, followed by another property in Bengaluru in August.
