The lowest hotel occupancy was recorded during the 19th Commonwealth Games (CWG) held 3-14 October in Delhi, India, this year.
Saeed Shervani, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Northern India, said occupancy was as low as 20% in one, two and three-star hotels during the 12-day period, while for established hotels occupancy was 50%.
Post-CWG, the hotel industry fears that the northern Indian cities of Gurgaon and Delhi may be oversaturated with rooms, according to thehindubusinessline.com.
Gurgaon witnessed a growth of nearly 350% in the last three years in hotel rooms, and now has 9,000 rooms available.
The huge gap between demand and supply has resulted in low occupancy and average room rates, said Shervani.
