Commune Hotel & Resorts will open a new property under its Thompson Hotels brand at Playa del Carmen in Mexico.
The new Thompson Playa del Carmen will be part of a mixed-use project from Mexico-based real estate development firm Thor Urbana and is scheduled to open in 2015.
The new property will be located in Playa del Carmen, which is on the shores of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
Thompson Playa del Carmen will be a luxury resort that will occupy two locations in the centre of Playa and will feature 125 rooms as well as suites. Amenities at the property will include a rooftop pool and a spa.
The hotel represents Commune’s second property in Mexico following the Thompson Los Cabos project, which is currently under development.
Thor Urbana chairman Joseph Sitt described Mexico as one of the hottest markets in Latin America.
"A combination of both economic and demographic growth, as well as an ambitious reform agenda that is expected to improve education, increase competitiveness, and open the energy sector to private foreign investment, will be very beneficial to Mexico’s mid- and long-term economic growth," Sitt added.
The development project will be spread over a 300,000ft² area and include international retail, cafés, and restaurants along with the Thompson Hotel at a two mile-long shopping, entertainment and nightlife pedestrian thoroughfare.
The hotel will offer a day/night culinary concept with panoramic views of the town and Caribbean Sea from its 30,000ft² rooftop, which includes an infinity pool and other amenities.
Commune Hotels & Resorts CEO Niki Leondakis said the project is a powerful combination of luxury hotel, sophisticated nightlife, and well-curated retail and dining.
"This deal marks our ongoing expansion into resort areas and the growing presence of Thompson-branded lifestyle hotels in Mexico and throughout Latin America," Leondakis added.
"We are honoured to partner with Thor Urbana to bring a fresh, innovative concept to Playa del Carmen that will be compelling to locals and visitors alike."
