Marriott Hotels will expand its presence in the US with the development of a new hotel, the Houston Marriott Marquis, in Houston, Texas.
The company has selected RIDA Development, which will work with Houston First Corporation, to jointly develop the new hotel.
Houston Marriott Marquis will be located in downtown Houston and have direct access to the Discovery Green, CBD theater district, University of Houston, upscale shopping, dining and underground Houston.
Scheduled to break ground in 2014 and open in 2016, the hotel will be across the street and connected to the Houston Convention Center through a skyway.
The new hotel will have 1,000 rooms, Marriott Hotels’ signature Greatroom lobby with flexible seating for small groups or individuals, and all-day menus offering light bites and meals. An outdoor area will include an infinity edge pool, a Texas shaped lazy river and seven event lawns.
In addition to over 100,000ft² of meeting space, there will be 20,000ft² of ground floor retail in the hotel.
The property will feature a coffee shop, sports bar and two restaurants, as well as a 5,000ft² spa with seven treatment rooms and a 5,000ft² fitness centre.
Marriott America Western region vice president Terri Dolan said the hotel will add hundreds of jobs and offer other economic benefits to the city.
"It will join the Marriott Marquis hotels in New York, San Diego, Atlanta and Washington, DC (opening in 2014), which are known throughout the convention and meetings industry for offering world-class amenities, services, and state-of-the-art meeting technology," Dolan added.
The Houston Marriott Marquis will be operated under Marriott’s Convention & Resort Network, which is a collection of over 60 meeting and convention hotels and resorts.
