Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, in association with Sekisui House, has opened what it claims is the first urban resort in Japan.

Situated in the centre of Kyoto city, which is known for its Zen temples, palaces and gardens, the riverside the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, is built based on the traditional Meiji house design.

Ritz-Carlton president and COO Herve Humler said: "We are honoured to open our fourth Ritz-Carlton in Japan, in the beautiful city of Kyoto.

It features luxury guestrooms and suites offering views of the Kamogawa River and the Higashiyama Mountains.

Rooms at the hotel include the Kamogawa Suite and its sister suites with their moon deck gardens (tsukimidai) as well as floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the river and mountains.

The new property also features a Japanese restaurant, ‘Mizuki’ serving modern Japanese cuisines such as kaiseki options, sushi, tempura and teppanyaki, an Italian restaurant La Locanda with private room called Ebisugawatei offering a wine menu of 250 varieties from Super Tuscans to Italian regional classics.

Amenities at the resort include four events rooms, as well as a wedding showroom for couples.
