The travel & tourism industry’s overall hiring activity declined 4.64% when compared with November 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.8% share of the global travel & tourism industry’s hiring activity in December 2021, up 0.04% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of December 2021 were 4.5% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 12.88% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive travel & tourism IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 62.51% emerged as the top IT occupation in the travel & tourism hiring activity in December 2021, a 17.78% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 14.06% in December 2021, down 18.75% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 9.24% share in December 2021, a decline of 36.53% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 6.4% share in December 2021 and a drop of 9.55% over November 2021.

Top five travel & tourism companies by recruitment activity in December 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 4.23% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global travel & tourism industry during December 2021 over November 2021.

A.P. Moller – Maersk posted 310 IT jobs in December 2021 and registered a rise of 25% over the previous month, followed by The Walt Disney with 175 jobs and a 22.22% decline. Expedia Group with 126 IT jobs and Deutsche Bahn with 81 jobs, recorded a 36.04% decline and a 7.95% drop, respectively, while United Parcel Service recorded a 143.48% rise with 56 job postings during December 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in travel & tourism industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global travel & tourism IT hiring activity in December 2021 with a 43.98% share, which marked a 21.35% drop over the previous month.

Europe stood next with 29.65%, registering a 17.02% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 23.07% share and an 18.08% drop over November 2021.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 2.3% and a month-on-month drop of 30.14%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.99%, registering a 46.67% increase over the previous month.
