Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians has broken ground on a $285m expansion of Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California, US.

The expansion will add a new wing with 568 rooms, a two-storey spa and salon, a fitness centre, two restaurants, and 67,000ft² of indoor and outdoor event space.

It will also add a hydrotherapy terrace, which is a resort-style complex with eight pool areas.

Expected to be completed by 2017, the Pechanga Resort & Casino will double the size of its resort amenities, and generate more than 3,500 jobs in the region.

"We estimate the expansion will result in an economic output of over $550m."

The owner and operator of the resort, Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians is a federally recognised tribe of of Luiseño Indians based in Riverside County, California.

After expansion, the property will have 1,090 rooms, 200,000ft² space for casino, 13 restaurants, 13 pools, and 274,500ft2 of event space.

Tutor-Perini has been selected to build the project while Delawie, the original architect company, has been chosen as designer.

Lifescapes International will act as architect for pool area and landscape, while CLEO Design and Los Angeles-based KNA Design will act as interior designer.

Beacon Economics Founding Partner Dr. Christopher Thornberg said: "We estimate the expansion will result in an economic output of over $550m, generating roughly 2,944 jobs up front as a result of construction-related activities.

"We estimate the local economy will benefit from an additional 560 jobs per year going forward as a result of expanded operations at Pechanga Resort & Casino."

Pechanga has also committed to provide nearly $20m to mitigate the expansion’s effects on the surrounding south Temecula area.
