Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has opened the Aloft Calgary University in western Canada, following a multi-million dollar transformation prior to conversion to the Aloft brand.

Owned by University Hotels, the hotel is located adjacent to the University of Calgary campus and McMahon Stadium.

The 143-room hotel features 4,000ft² of meeting space, a signature W XYZ bar, a full service day spa, spin studio, and speciality restaurant.

Additional facilities include an indoor Splash pool, Re-charge 24hr fitness centre, and flexible meeting space for both business meetings and social gatherings.

Starwood specialty select brands senior vice president Brian McGuinness said that this first conversion project for Aloft in the Canadian market is a significant step for the brand.

"Conversions are becoming an increasingly important growth channel for Aloft and will help to fuel growth in markets like Canada."

Starwood’s Aloft brand has 100 properties worldwide.

The brand recently announced that select properties will roll out the second phase of Smart Check In, allowing guests to use their smartphones to check in and open their guestroom door.

The announcement comes on the heels of the original Smart Check In, the first mobile check-in using RFID technology to bypass the front desk, currently available at 14 Aloft properties.
