Hospitality group Accor, in collaboration with Propreal Capital Partners, is set to introduce its luxury hotel brand Sofitel to Porto, Portugal's second-largest city.

Set to open in 2028, this new venture represents the second collaboration between Propreal and Sofitel, building on the success of their previous partnership with the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper.

Sofitel chief development officer Xavier Grange said: “This signing reinforces our presence in two iconic cities, offering complementary urban experiences.

“Following the successful opening of Sofitel Barcelona Skipper, we are very happy to partner again with Propreal Capital Partners.”

The hotel, which combines Sofitel's French energy with Porto's cultural heritage, aims to serve both international visitors and the local community.

Sofitel Porto will offer 132 rooms within an 11,000m² space, featuring public areas, diverse dining options, and green spaces.

A key aspect of the project is the preservation of the property's façade, while the interior will be designed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán.

Internally, the design efforts spearheaded by designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán will emphasise the structure's unique character.

The restoration will emphasise the building's original features and artisanal details.

Sofitel CEO Maud Bailly said: “Porto is a city with a deep cultural and historical identity, and we are honoured to introduce Sofitel in such a prestigious location. True to our brand promise of building cultural bridges between French and local cultures, Sofitel Porto will further strengthen the deep-rooted connection between Portugal and France.

“As the second-largest city and an economic hub, Porto combines heritage, coastal beauty, and a thriving cultural scene.”

The decision to establish Sofitel Porto was made after Propreal Capital Partners secured a strategic location, presenting Accor with an opportunity to extend its luxury segment in the region.

The new hotel will become a flagship for Sofitel on the Iberian Peninsula and represents Accor's first luxury property in Porto.

Propreal Capital Partners founder and CEO Yves de Kerdanet said: "The Iberian Peninsula, and particularly Portugal, has been a key focus for Propreal Capital Partners. We continue to see strong growth potential in the region and remain committed to identifying and actively developing landmark assets where we can create value for our investors.

“With Sofitel Porto, we have secured an exceptional location in the heart of a booming city, ensuring that this property will set a new standard for luxury hospitality in the region.”

Accor already has a presence in the city with its Novotel, Mercure, and ibis brands.

In June 2023, Accor expanded its European portfolio by completing a franchise agreement with CG Resort for the Pullman Kolašin Breza in Montenegro.
