Global hospitality company Hilton has signed an agreement to open its namesake brand hotel in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking the group’s expansion in the southern part of India.

Hilton’s new Chennai hotel will be located in Egmore and be developed in partnership with MKR Estate Developers, a part of MGM Healthcare Group.

The company expects the hotel to begin operations in January 2029.

This opening will add to Hilton’s existing presence in the city, which already includes Hilton Chennai.

Hilton Asia Pacific Development senior vice president Clarence Tan said: “Hilton Chennai Egmore represents our second Hilton Hotels & Resorts property in Chennai, underscoring the strong demand we see for our flagship brand in this region.”

The upcoming hotel will form part of a mixed-use development that also features a commercial office complex.

Hilton Chennai Egmore will feature 195 guest rooms and suites, with standard rooms measuring approximately 390ft².

The hotel will include a range of amenities such as a rooftop lounge, multiple dining venues, a lobby bar, and wellness facilities, including a fitness centre, spa, indoor and outdoor pools.

Additional features include a bowling alley and a children’s play area.

The hotel will also offer nearly 17,000ft² of event space, comprising meeting rooms, ballrooms, and a boardroom for corporate and social events.

Hilton senior vice president Zubin Saxena said: “The signing of Hilton Chennai Egmore is a significant step in strengthening our South India portfolio. We are proud to partner with MGM Healthcare Group to deliver Hilton's world class service offerings in Egmore.”

Located in a key cultural and commercial district in Chennai, Hilton anticipates that the location will attract demand from both business and event sectors.

Chennai continues to be recognised for its activity in information technology services, automotive manufacturing, finance, and healthcare. The city also draws a rising leisure market due to its cultural attractions.

MGM Healthcare Group chairman MK Rajagopalan said: “With Hilton's global expertise and our vision for Egmore as an upcoming urban hub, we are confident this hotel will set a new benchmark in the city's hospitality landscape and contribute meaningfully to Chennai's continued growth.”

The expansion also forms part of Hilton’s broader growth strategy across South Asia, where it operates and has on the pipeline over 65 hotels.

The company earlier announced plans to double its brand footprint in India, setting a goal of reaching 300 hotels in the region within ten years.

Recently, Hilton’s Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Tuscaloosa, Alabama, US management was taken over by Crestline Hotels & Resorts.
