Hotel Indalo Park in Spain has implemented an energy management system (EMS) to enhance building efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

This digital solution enables smart energy use in response to real-time guest demand.

This initiative is part of the hotel's commitment to sustainability, recognising the tourism sector's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2018, Nature Climate Change reported that tourism is responsible for approximately 8% of worldwide emissions, with hotels accounting for 1%.

The implementation of the EMS was made possible through funding from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, supported by the European Union's Next Generation funds.

This funding is part of the Last Mile Digitalization Projects for Tourism Companies programme, which aligns with global decarbonisation efforts.

The EMS provides centralised control over critical systems encompassing heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), domestic hot water (DHW), and refrigeration units.

These systems previously operated on fixed temperature settings, but now they can adjust their energy use according to actual demand, improving energy performance.

With the new system, Hotel Indalo Park anticipates a 30% reduction in energy consumption, equating to an annual saving of 247,905kWh and a decrease of 66,934kg in CO₂ emissions.

The environmental benefits are complemented by an expected economic saving of €37,904 ($43,645.89) per year.

For more than three decades, the family-run Hotel Indalo Park has been known for its customer-centric service.

Now operating under the leadership of the second generation of the founding family, the hotel continues to integrate tradition with innovation, demonstrated by the adoption of the EMS.
