Swedish hotel company Scandic has disclosed plans to further expand its presence in Germany with the signing of a new hotel in Hamburg, slated to open in 2030.

The hotel will feature approximately 430 rooms and is situated in an area that offers visibility of Ankelmannplatz square and Berliner Tor station, part of one of the urban development projects in the city.

It is situated in a strategic location that is a destination for both logistics, trade and tourism.

Scandic Hotels Group president and CEO Jens Mathiesen said: “This investment is an important step in our long-term strategy to establish attractive hotel destinations in Germany. We’re not just building a new hotel, but creating a place where people can meet, get inspired and feel at home, right in the heart of Hamburg.”

Scandic secured a long-term lease agreement with landlord PEG and Reiss+Co for the plot designated for the new hotel construction.

The hotel's design will aim to suit the needs of both business and leisure travellers, with an emphasis on sustainability and Nordic aesthetics.

Scandic Hotels portfolio development senior vice-president Jesper Engman said: “We’re happy to be entering into a long-term cooperation with PEG and Reiss+Co. This investment is also an important step that will strengthen our presence in Hamburg – a leading European hub for science, research and education with many renowned universities and institutions.

With a population of nearly two million people, Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and home to the country's largest harbour.

This expansion marks a step forward in Scandic’s growth strategy and comes after the company's move earlier this year to sign a lease agreement with AXA Investment Managers for a 214-room hotel in Berlin.
