Global: Worldwide Covid-19 cases have now passed 31 million, with deaths exceeding 960,000 according to Johns Hopkins University tracker.

US: The US is nearing 200,000 deaths, nine months after the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The number of deaths in the US, the highest in the world, stood at 199,509 on the Johns Hopkins University tracker on Monday morning, roughly a fifth of the global total.

Mexico: Mexico’s health ministry has reported 3,542 new coronavirus cases and 235 new deaths.

Brazil: Brazil’s health ministry has reported 16,389 additional confirmed cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to more than 4.52 million, though the latest numbers do not include three states.

Australia: Australia’s coronavirus hotspot of Victoria reported its lowest daily rise in infections in three months on Monday, although state premier Daniel Andrews said there were no plans yet to ease restrictions sooner than expected.

Spain: Madrid’s rate of transmission is more than double the national average, which already leads European contagion charts.

Germany: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 922 to 272,337, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed on Monday.

France: France’s daily coronavirus cases rose by 10,569 on Sunday, after surging to more than 13,000 twice in the highest daily increases since the national lockdown ended in May on Saturday.

Ireland: Ireland recorded 396 new cases on Sunday, the highest since mid-May, with about two thirds of the infections in Dublin.

Italy: Italy reported 1,587 new coronavirus cases on Sunday down from 1,638 the previous day. There were 15 additional deaths bringing the total number of people that have died from the virus in Italy since the beginning of the pandemic to 35,707.

China: China’s National Health Commission has reported 12 new coronavirus cases, raising the number of cases in the country to 85,291, although most of the infections have now recovered. The agency said all the new cases are imported. At least 25 others were categorised as asymptomatic.

South Korea: South Korea has reported 70 new coronavirus cases, the second consecutive day that it reported infections below 100, but the government also admitted that “high number” of untraceable cases remain.

Lockdown updates

New Zealand: Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s prime minister, further eased restrictions on the country’s largest city, Auckland, and completely removed domestic restrictions on the rest of the nation, after zero new cases were reported.

South Korea: Schools in the South Korean capital Seoul and nearby areas resumed in-person classes for the first time in almost a month on Monday after daily coronavirus cases dropped to the lowest levels since mid-August, Reuters reports.

Israel: In Israel, which, on Friday, became the first country globally to return to a strict nationwide lockdown, thousands of protesters gathered on Sunday in Jerusalem to demand the resignation of the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, the first such demonstrations since the start of a new nationwide lockdown.

Canada: The government of Canada’s province of Quebec has announced new restrictions on gatherings in order to prevent a second wave of coronavirus infections.

Myanmar: A stay-at-home order for Myanmar’s commercial capital, Yangon, has taken effect as the country tries to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Lebanon: Lebanon hit a third consecutive day of record virus cases as Health Minister Hamad Hassan proposes a two-week lockdown, Associated Press reported.

Denmark: Denmark’s government is offering help to restaurants and bars hurt by new Covid-19 restrictions after getting parliament’s backing for the aid package. The government will provide compensation for rent and other fixed costs to firms that lose revenue after opening hours were cut, the business ministry said in a statement late Sunday.
