India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) has introduced a range of new digital platforms, hospitality initiatives and governance reforms aimed at strengthening India’s tourism sector and supporting future industry growth.

The announcements were made by India’s Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, during a joint celebration marking 60 years of ITDC and 70 years of The Ashok Hotel in New Delhi.

The initiatives highlight ITDC’s evolving role in India’s tourism and hospitality ecosystem, particularly as the government focuses on digital tourism infrastructure, immersive visitor experiences and sustainable tourism development.

Industry observers note that such programmes align with broader efforts to expand inbound tourism, develop the MICE tourism segment and strengthen India’s global tourism competitiveness.

Digital transformation and online tourism services

A key element of ITDC’s strategy is the expansion of digital tourism platforms and services. The organisation launched a new online booking portal designed to provide integrated travel services for government departments, public sector organisations and institutional clients.

The system enables users to book flights, hotels, transport and conferences through a single digital interface.

Ashok Travels & Tours, ITDC’s travel services division, also introduced an updated digital and physical brochure repositioning the business as a comprehensive travel services provider. Services include visa processing, transport arrangements, accommodation bookings and concierge support for corporate and government travel.

These developments reflect wider digital transformation trends in the global tourism industry, where travel booking platforms, integrated travel management systems and online service delivery are becoming central to tourism operations.

Investment in heritage tourism and visitor experiences

ITDC also announced several initiatives focused on heritage tourism and experiential travel, both of which are growing segments within global tourism markets.

The corporation is developing new immersive sound and light shows at major historic sites, including Leh, Purana Qila, Bundi, Sarkhej Roza and Udayagiri and Khandagiri. The shows will use projection mapping, laser technology and multimedia storytelling to present the historical narratives of these destinations.

Within its hospitality portfolio, ITDC expanded event and exhibition infrastructure at The Ashok hotel in New Delhi. Renovated outdoor venues and new multipurpose event spaces aim to support conferences, exhibitions and wedding events.

The expansion targets the fast-growing “Meet in India” and “Wed in India” tourism segments, which are part of the government’s strategy to increase international tourism revenue.

Industry analysts view MICE tourism and destination weddings as high-value segments that can significantly increase visitor spending and extend tourist stays.

Hospitality training and governance reforms

Several initiatives announced by ITDC focus on industry skills development and operational governance within the tourism sector.

The Ashok Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management has been repositioned as the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Ashok. The move aligns the institution with India’s national network of hotel management institutes and aims to strengthen professional training within the hospitality industry.

In parallel, ITDC released updated operational frameworks including a new procurement manual and standardised contractual templates. These reforms are designed to improve transparency, compliance with government financial rules and efficiency across ITDC’s operations.

The organisation also signed a partnership with India’s Ministry of Tribal Affairs to train 1,500 tribal homestay operators across the country. The programme will provide training in hospitality standards, financial literacy and digital operations, supporting inclusive tourism development in rural areas.

Role of ITDC in India’s tourism growth

Established in 1966, ITDC is a government-owned enterprise under India’s Ministry of Tourism and has played a central role in developing tourism infrastructure and hospitality services in the country.

With India positioning tourism as a major economic growth sector, the government is increasingly investing in digital infrastructure, heritage tourism experiences and workforce development.

Industry stakeholders expect that ITDC’s latest initiatives could support wider tourism sector growth, particularly in digital travel services, experiential tourism and high-value event tourism segments.
