The George Hotel in Huddersfield, UK, a Grade II-listed building that has stood vacant since 2013, will receive an additional £9.8m ($12.8m) in funding from Kirklees Council, according to the BBC.

The council acquired the property in 2020 as part of a master plan to renovate and revitalise the Huddersfield town centre.

The project was granted £20.2m two years ago but increasing costs and on-site issues required further funds to be allocated bringing the total spend on the hotel to £30m.

This additional funding for the renovation will not require any new spending, as it will be drawn from existing allocations for Huddersfield’s regeneration efforts.

The George Hotel’s renovation is expected to include a 70-seater restaurant and bar, conference space, and a 100-cover banqueting suite, catering to both business and private events.

The development, which is divided into three distinct blocks (A, B, and C), will feature interconnected ground floors and is set to open in 2027 under the management of Radisson.

The council is also considering the feasibility of increasing the room count from 91 to 108 to enhance revenue and expedite the repayment of its investment.

Kirklees Council leader Carole Pattison said: “The George Hotel plays such a key role in Huddersfield’s past, and for people travelling by rail it will always be one of the very first buildings to welcome you as you enter the town centre.

“Bringing this building back to life is one of our priorities within the Huddersfield Blueprint, and we’re unwavering in that commitment.

Once the renovations are finalised, the hotel will be rebranded as Radisson Red, with an anticipated opening next year.

Pattison added: “We want the finished hotel to be fantastic because we know how much it’s loved by local people, and what a great opportunity this presents to boost our local economy and tourism.”
