BeCause has digitised Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s (Alliance) Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) and Hotel Water Measurement Initiative (HWMI) methodologies.

This development, unveiled at the ITB Berlin travel show, allows hotels to use the Alliance’s industry measurement tools, HCMI and HWMI.

These tools are available through BeCause’s centralised hub.

HCMI, using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, calculates carbon footprints while HWMI assists in calculating water usage on hotel properties.

These methodologies are claimed to apply to all hotel types and are adopted by more than 30,000 hotels, including Hyatt, Marriott International, Radisson Hotel Group, and Scandic.

The integration of these tools into BeCause’s AI-powered platform is expected to enhance the user experience by simplifying data collection, analysis, and reporting.

The digitisation is intended to reduce the time and costs for hotels to gather, and communicate data associated with their carbon and water usage and impact.

It will also enable hotels to use HCMI/HWMI metrics for additional sustainability certifications.

Sustainable Hospitality Alliance CEO Glenn Mandziuk said: “We’d like to thank the team at BeCause for digitising HCMI and HWMI which will enable more of the industry to access it and dramatically improve its usability.

“Digitising this resource will greatly accelerate our shared goal of reaching Net Positive as a sector, together. We encourage more organisations to follow BeCause’s lead to ensure a transparent and globally comparable approach to carbon, water and waste reporting.”

BeCause’s AI-powered hub has been developed to centralise a hotel’s sustainability data and automate transmission to different stakeholders, including booking marketplaces and certifications such as GreenKey.

According to the company, once hotel data is entered, it can be repurposed and automatically matched with various frameworks.

It also ensures regulatory compliance and simplifies green certification processes.

BeCause CEO and co-founder Frederik Steensgaard said: “We all know that knowledge is power. With the new digitised version of HCMI, the Alliance members will gain the valuable insight they need to make decisions that benefit both their business and the planet.”

Besides digitising the HCMI/HWMI methodologies, BeCause has rolled out user-friendly improvements to hotel managers’ workflows, thereby presenting only relevant questions for them to answer, and eliminating the need to review every question linearly.

Earlier this year, Hubli, an online marketplace and booking platform for corporate meetings, events, and group hotel lodging, partnered with BeCause.

BeCause is a Danish technology startup that works with more than 20,000 hotels.
