PBA Group of Companies, in partnership with Concord Hospitality, has commenced the transformation of the former Canadian Centre office building in Calgary into an Element Hotel by Westin.

In November 2023, the Element Hotel was announced as one of the City of Calgary’s partners for downtown office conversion.

This initiative marks the first hospitality venture under the Downtown Calgary Development Incentive Programme.

PBA Group of Companies planning and development senior vice president James Scott said: “We’re honoured to help take one of the first steps in transforming our downtown into a differentiated residential and recreational district that serves as a symbol of progressive inner city planning with this conversion.

“We’re proud of our trusted partnership with Concord Hospitality and look forward to continuing the momentum with this novel conversion project which will have a notable impact in the community.”

The 12-storey office building was constructed in 1982.

Currently, 170,000ft² of unused office space will be removed, converting the building into a 226-suite hotel, featuring fully furnished extended stay units.

The suites will include studios and one-bedroom options, with in-room kitchens and spa-inspired bathrooms, among others,

The Element Hotel will also offer a lobby lounge and café, a casual dining experience on the 12th floor, common areas, a meeting room, and a fitness centre.

The Element brand offers a Studio Commons concept, which combines four guest rooms with shared kitchen and living room areas.

This conversion project has incorporated recycled materials in its design and construction, diverting 572,000kg of demolition waste from landfills.

Demolition has been finished and construction is currently in progress. The hotel is expected to be completed by mid-2025.

Last year, Concord Hospitality reintroduced the reimagined The Alloy Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, US, following a $18.5m overhaul.
