The travel and hospitality sector has been one of the hardest hit sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the larger public still holding back on travel plans or hotel stays due to fears of disease contraction.

Verdict has conducted a poll to assess the factors that give customers the confidence to fly or stay in a hotel amid the pandemic.

Analysis of the poll results shows that a certificate of cleanliness and government recommendation or accreditation gave the most confidence to fly or stay in a hotel, according to 50% and 33% of the respondents respectively.

The remaining 17% of the respondents opined they were not worried about cleanliness amid the pandemic.

COVID-19 impact on travel and hospitality sector

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how travel can serve as a vector for the virus spread, forcing countries to close borders and implement lockdown measures. The fear of travel has brought the travel and hospitality sector to a near standstill. Although domestic travel has returned to near normal, international travel is expected to take longer to recover.

Business and leisure travel will return at different times based on travel restrictions, while hospitality sector is expected to take longer to recover.

The global hotel industry is not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels before 2023, according to McKinsey & Company which adds that the recovery of the travel and hospitality sector will be dependent on meeting customer expectations of hygiene and flexibility.

Hotels will need to demonstrate the highest levels of hygiene to attract customers, says GlobalData. Deep-cleaning of hotel rooms, meeting areas, fitness areas and other common areas will be paramount to meeting customer demands.

As the industry recovers, contactless technologies are being used to allay the fears of customers, adds GlobalData. Contactless check-in, biometric boarding, contactless elevators and disinfection robots are some of the technologies being deployed to ensure safety and hygiene.
