Coco Palms Resort, located on the island of Kauai, has been set to be demolished nearly three decades after it was severely damaged by Hurricane Iniki, AP News reported.
First opened in 1953, the resort was a popular destination for Hollywood royalty, including Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Bing Crosby, and was where Elvis Presley and Joan Blackman’s characters got married in the movie “Blue Hawaii.”
The 46-acre property was also once home to Kauai’s last queen Deborah Kapule but fell into disrepair after the hurricane hit in 1992, despite multiple attempts at restoration.
As part of the move, a new $250m project by Utah-based Reef Capital Partners will replace the Coco Palms Resort with a new 350-room hotel and a cultural centre to commemorate the property’s history.
The project which will begin its construction soon and is slated to be completed within three years.
Of the total land, approximately 10 acres only will be used for the new project by the company.
