Global online travel services company Expedia has rolled out a new travel planning feature powered by OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT in its mobile application.

The new feature, which is currently in the beta testing phase, allows Expedia members to start an open-ended conversation with the chatbot to get recommendations on travel destinations, flights, hotel bookings, tourist attraction sites and transportation.

Designed to enhance the trip-planning experience, the AI-driven feature automatically saves hotels discussed in the chat to the trip section in the app, to simplify booking.

Expedia Group vice chairman and CEO Peter Kern said: “Every great trip can be made or lost while planning and shopping. As the leader in travel tech, Expedia continues to build out the core operating system for the industry, constantly enhancing capabilities and making trip planning faster, simpler and even more informative.

“By integrating ChatGPT into the Expedia app and combining it with our other AI-based shopping capabilities, like hotel comparison, price tracking for flights and trip-collaboration tools, we can now offer travellers an even more intuitive way to build their perfect trip.”

The company stated that improvements will be made to the feature based on feedback from users. Furthermore, it explained that it took several measures to reduce the incidence of inaccurate results in order to ensure a user-friendly experience.

The new travel planning experience comes after the company recently built a plugin on the ChatGPT site to begin trip planning and head to Expedia’s site once they are ready to book.

Expedia already incorporates AI and machine learning throughout its platform to assist members in booking, price comparison, and resolving issues related to trip changes.
