Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has signed its first hotel in Jorhat, the cultural capital of India’s Assam state, under the Ginger brand.

Johart is a key transit point to Kaziranga National Park and Majuli – the largest riverine island in the world. It is also an important centre for tea traders and golfers in India’s northeast region.

The Indian Hotels Company and its subsidiaries offer a group of brands that include Taj, SeleQtions, Vivanta and Ginger.

IHCL executive vice president for Real Estate & Development Suma Venkatesh said: “IHCL is very committed to North East India and has been expanding rapidly in the region.

“Jorhat, a thriving city, is an important centre for tea trading and the gateway to leading tourist destinations in Assam.”

The 100-key hotel will be developed around the Ginger brand’s “lean luxe design” to ensure guests are provided with a contemporary and seamless hospitality experience.

Being built on a fully fitted lease basis, this greenfield project is located on Club Road, next to Jorhat Gymkhana – the third oldest golf club in the world and is a quick drive from the airport.

The property will feature Qmin, an all-day dining space offering a wide range of culinary selections, a fitness facility and meeting rooms.

Following the addition of the Jorhat hotel, IHCL will have five hotels in the northeastern state, including three under development.

In June, IHCL expanded its presence in the southern part of India with the opening of a new Ginger-branded hotel in Kochi, Kerala.
