Brazil expects to see seven million international tourists by 2015

International tourist arrivals to Brazil are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.72% during 2011-15, resulting in seven million arrivals by 2015, according to a BRICdata report.

International tourist arrivals to Brazil are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.72% during 2011-15, resulting in seven million arrivals by 2015, according to a BRICdata report.

Domestic tourism is also expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.41% in the next five years, which the report attributes to a rising middle-class with disposable income and infrastructural improvement measures initiated by the Brazilian Government.

A strong economy, promotional measures by the Ministry of Tourism, the increasing prevalence of medical tourism owing to advanced healthcare technology and upcoming international sporting events being hosted by Brazil are expected to drive inbound tourism in the country.

According to the BRICdata report, substandard tourism infrastructure in the country, in terms of access to tourist destinations, accommodation and air seat capacity, is anticipated to impede the industry’s progress.

The government will prioritise the development of infrastructure to deal with increasing tourist volumes for upcoming events like the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, the report forecasted.

In 2010, Brazil recorded a 7.5% increase in international tourist arrivals to 5.16 million compared to a 4.9% decline in 2009, marking a speedy recovery from the global economic turmoil.

The Brazilian tourism industry witnessed declines in both inbound and outbound tourist volumes during the second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009.
