InterContinental Hotels has entered a management agreement with Al Majd Al Arabiah Company for the opening of the Holiday Inn Makkah Abraaj Al Tayseer in Makkah, Saudi Arabia in 2015.

The Holiday Inn Makkah Abraaj Al Tayseer will consist of 5,154 rooms spread over five towers and will open in phases.

The first phase, consisting of 1,650 rooms across two towers is set to open by the end of 2015, followed by 3,500 rooms set to open over the following three years.

The new hotel will be situated where Abraaj Al Tayseer pilgrim stands, and is 900 metres from Al-Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque).

According to InterContinental, the two towers that are set to open in 2015 will feature meeting spaces, fitness centres and a medical clinic. All towers will have one large all-day dining restaurant with menus catering to group travellers.

IHG Middle East and Africa chief operating officer Pascal Gauvin said: "With religious travel growing, and the government set to improve infrastructure in line with this, there is a need for more branded accommodation in the holy cities of Makkah and Medina.

According to the company, Hajj visits are expected to exceed five million by 2025, which was two million in 2013. Makkah is undergoing infrastructural upgrades to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the city.
