Marriott International has outlined plans to open 30 new properties across the continent by 2020, in a move to expand globally.

Africa’s largest hotel company, following its strategic acquisition of Protea Hotel Group, plans to open nine of the 30 properties by the end of 2015.

Marriott International Middle East and Africa President and Managing Director Alex Kyriakidis said: "The potential of the African market is awe-inspiring and only really matched by the extraordinary people and places we encounter every day as our brands puts down roots across the continent.

"Over the next few years we plan to expand our presence even further from ten countries to 17 with a capital investment by Marriott’s real estate partners of $1.5bn across the continent."

A new Residence Inn by Marriott Kampala Kololo has been signed, expanding its extended stay segment.

Marriott Executive Apartments Addis Ababa, owned by Sunshine Business plc, is slated to be the first property under the extended stay brand to open in Africa.

Further openings are scheduled to follow in 2015 across the continent in South Africa, Nigeria and Uganda, and Marriott International’s first properties in Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda.

By 2020 Marriott International is set to go from 120 properties, to 150 properties across 17 markets in Africa.

"We have achieved a great deal in a short period of time but I firmly believe this is just the start of the Marriott International story in Africa," Kyriakidis added.

Marriott International operates more than 4,000 properties in 78 countries and territories.
