US-based developer The Roxbury Group has signed an agreement with Marriott to convert The Plaza into an extended-stay apartment hotel in Michigan.

This will mark the first Apartments By Marriott Bonvoy property in the US.

According to Detroit Free Press, the 12-storey tower was previously converted from offices to upscale apartments in 2015-2016.

The building’s current 72 apartments will transition into extended-stay units, with the total unit count expected to increase to around 92.

This will be achieved by converting some two-bedroom units into one-bedroom units.

The conversion is anticipated to commence in the later part of 2024 while the current residents have been provided the option to stay until their leases conclude.

The Roxbury Group principal Di Rita said: “The building has performed just fine since we opened it. Candidly, it was more of an evaluation of the evolving nature of the residential demand downtown.

“This allows us to reach a wider audience than the more traditional, unfurnished long-term lease approach that we’ve been following there.”

The tower, as an office building, was officially known as Professional Plaza Tower.

Designed by architect Gerald Crane, the tower was opened in 1966 as a medical arts building at 3800 Woodward, Midtown Detroit.

Roxbury’s collection of hotels in Detroit includes Element Detroit at the Metropolitan and an upcoming Autograph Hotel in the David Whitney Building.

The collection also includes AC Detroit at Bonstelle, which is currently under development and is expected to open in September next year.
