Spain-based Meliá Hotels International and Grupo Puntacana have disclosed the start of construction of Meliá Bergantín Beach, a new five-star hotel in Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic.

The project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the region’s tourism sector and increase Puerto Plata’s profile as an international destination.

The ground-breaking ceremony for Meliá Bergantín Beach took place on 21 October.

Meliá Hotels International chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer stated: “We are proud to contribute to the development of Puerto Plata, combining sustainability, innovation, and respect for the environment and its people.

“This project embodies the quality tourism we believe in—one that creates value for all and is deeply rooted in local communities.”

The new 400-room hotel will also offer facilities designed to accommodate both leisure and meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) guests.

The property is planned to feature a beach club, spa, pools, children’s areas, and a variety of dining options.

The hotel forms part of a public-private partnership between Meliá Hotels International, Grupo Puntacana, Banco de Reservas, and Banco Popular.

Meliá Hotels International chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer said: “We are proud to contribute to the development of Puerto Plata, combining sustainability, innovation, and respect for the environment and its people. This project embodies the quality tourism we believe in—one that creates value for all and is deeply rooted in local communities."

Last month, Meliá Hotels International formed an alliance with LALIGA, an organisation focused on leisure and entertainment, to strengthen its footprint in the Middle East.
