IHG unveils Crowne Plaza hotel plans in Maroochydore, Australia

The development aims to meet the region's increasing demand for conference and event (C&E) infrastructure.

IHG Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with Felix Capital, has unveiled updated plans for the new Crowne Plaza hotel in Maroochydore, Australia, a strategic pivot from the initial voco Maroochydore concept.

The development, situated on Ocean Street of the coastal town in Queensland, aims to meet the region's increasing demand for “quality” conference and event (C&E) infrastructure.

The Crowne Plaza property will offer 180 guest rooms and over 770m² of flexible meeting and event space, encompassing a 600m² ballroom, catering to a variety of events.

Guests will have access to a wellness retreat, gym, sauna, a 30m pool and spa, and secure basement parking.

The hotel's food and beverage facilities will feature an all-day restaurant with 210 seats, a signature dining venue with 160 seats, an outdoor pool bar, a lounge, and a lobby bar.

Felix Capital director Michael Maroun said: “The response to our original vision was overwhelmingly positive, and securing additional land gave us the chance to think bigger. With Crowne Plaza at the heart of this development, we can now create a space that truly meets the needs of the region, particularly in the conferencing and events space.

“We’re confident this hotel will not only attract events and activations to the Sunshine Coast but also elevate the broader visitor experience and boost the region’s appeal as a year-round destination.”

Local and state government projections indicate a requirement for an additional 2,400 hotel rooms by 2032, equating to approximately ten new hotels to bolster economic growth.

The Maroochydore hotel is set to address this demand and enhance the area's tourism and business travel capabilities.

Construction on the Maroochydore site is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the opening aimed for 2028.

IHG Hotels & Resorts Australasia and Pacific managing director Matt Tripolone said: "We worked closely with Felix Capital to reimagine this opportunity, thinking strategically about the elements that will create the best outcome for the hotel and the Sunshine Coast region.

“Through discussion and feedback, it became clear that there was real value in delivering a hotel that puts conferences and events at its core, as well as delivering an exceptional guest experience.

“We’re proud to support Felix Capital’s vision to deliver an incredible asset that will draw people to the region for business, leisure, and everything in between.”

IHG and Felix Capital are partnering for the second time for this development, following their agreement for the Holiday Inn & Suites Caloundra that is expected to open in 2030.

Earlier this year, IHG also announced a collaboration with Luxora Hotels to introduce the Holiday Inn brand to Townsville, further expanding its presence in Queensland.
