A former 1914 Beaux Arts theatre in San Sebastián, Spain, has reopened as Hotel Palacio Bellas Artes San Sebastián, Curio Collection by Hilton, after a restoration and conversion into an 81-room hotel.

The building, in the city centre, joins Curio Collection by Hilton’s international hotel network.

Opened during San Sebastián’s Belle Époque period, Palacio Bellas Artes was originally designed by Ramón Cortázar, who was identified as one of the founders of the Basque architectural style in the region.

The restoration was led by architect Ignacio Quemada and included rebuilding the dome.

Interior work was carried out by the Spanish design company Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados, which reworked the spaces in line with the former cinema's layout.

The hotel has 81 rooms and suites across several categories.

‘Gallery’ rooms, which the property says are its largest category, are spread across all four floors and come in different formats with views or links to the surrounding urban setting.

Above these are ‘Amphitheatre’ rooms on the top two levels, based on the upper sections of a theatre auditorium, and larger ‘Grand Stalls’ rooms, some with a balcony or a separate sitting area.

The suite range includes the ‘Front Box’ and ‘Corner Box’ while the Cupula Suite is positioned under the dome.

The hotel is part of Hilton Honors, the company's guest loyalty programme that covers 28 brands.

Hilton EMEA executive vice-president and president Simon Vincent said: “San Sebastián is one of Europe’s most compelling destinations, celebrated for its world-class gastronomy, coastal beauty and rich cultural character.

“The opening of Hotel Palacio Bellas Artes San Sebastián represents an important addition to our portfolio - bringing new life to one of the city’s most iconic historic buildings while strengthening our offering in Spain, where we now have more than 65 hotels trading and in the pipeline.”
