The Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in Dubai has launched the “Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp” to recognise hotels that adhere to the highest standards of sustainability.

Launched in line with the UAE Year of Sustainability, the new initiative is a part of DET’s commitment to boost the city’s position as a leading sustainable tourism destination.

The new stamp, which was developed in partnership with Dubai’s hospitality sector, has been designed to support the NetZero 2050 initiative of the UAE.

It will serve as a validation of the property’s commitment to sustainability and show its sustainable practices.

Hotels are required to meet the DET’s 19 sustainability requirements to be awarded the stamp.

Waste management programmes, energy and water efficiency and staff education and engagement initiatives are among the criteria.

A senior independent industry professionals’ committee will supervise the accreditation process, which will be based on global best practices.

The stamp will include a three-tier scheme with gold, silver and bronze categories. The hotel nominations will run from 3 August to 31 August.

Dubai’s DET corporate strategy and performance sector acting CEO Yousuf Lootah said: “We have carefully curated a set of high standard criteria that will reward hotels that go above and beyond in their sustainable practices.

“By recognising these exemplary establishments, we are encouraging others to follow suit and embrace sustainable initiatives that not only benefit their businesses but also contribute to the collective well-being of our city and the world at large.

“Supported by Dubai’s vibrant hotel industry, this initiative is a strategic step towards achieving our goal of making Dubai a leading destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainability experience.”
