InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has broken ground on its first Avid-branded property in Canada, with plans to open by spring 2022.

The property is owned by PI Cap and is situated in the city of Vaughan, a suburb of Toronto.

The 119-room hotel will have six floors and located a short drive from Toronto Pearson International airport.

IHG vice president of avid hotels and Atwell Suites Karen Gilbride said: “On behalf of IHG and our thousands of colleagues, I congratulate PI Cap on this milestone for the avid hotels brand in Canada.

“We believe this mainstream brand will continue to resonate strongly with hotel owners due to the lower cost to build, efficient staffing model and overall operating economics in the current environment and for years to come.”

The midscale Avid brand, launched in September 2017, has been designed to operate under a franchise model.

At present, there are over twelve Avid hotels open across the US and Mexico, and more than 200 properties in the development pipeline.

IHG plans to launch the first Avid hotel in Europe at Frankfurt Airport in 2021.

In 2018, IHG crossed the milestone of 100 open Holiday Inn Express hotels in Canada. IHG has over 180 properties with 25,000 rooms in Canada.

IHG franchises, leases, manages or owns over 5,900 hotels and about 883,000 guest rooms in more than 100 countries, with over 1,900 hotels in its development pipeline.
