IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a conversion deal with Iwate Hotel & Resort to open or refurbish three properties in Appi Kogen, Japan.

The three hotels will open under IHG brands in the luxury, upscale and midscale segments in December this year.

The deal adds over 1,000 rooms to IHG’s Japan portfolio across the ANA InterContinental, ANA Crowne Plaza and ANA Holiday Inn brands.

The hotel portfolio will feature 18 restaurants and bars, more than 3,000m² of meeting and conference space, numerous retail outlets, and ten health and recreation venues, as well as a 2,000m² onsen facility.

IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan, Australasia & Pacific development VP Abhijay Sandilya said: “We are delighted to make this announcement in partnership with Iwate Hotel & Resort Co.

“These world-class hotels in Japan’s premier four-season resort destination, Appi Kogen, will offer something for every type of traveller, including rich guest experiences and IHG’s True Hospitality for Good.

“I am confident that we will see strong domestic demand and, as borders reopen, from international travellers who are looking to get a real Japanese experience with the familiarity of IHG’s global brands.”

In 2006, IHG formed a joint venture with ANA to operate as IHGANA in Japan. IHGANA has 37 hotels in its portfolio.

Recently, IHG signed a franchise agreement with Bonnington Hospitality for voco Bonnington Jumeirah Lakes Towers Dubai.
