Six Senses, which is part of UK-based hospitality group IHG Hotels & Resorts, has forayed into Japan with the launch of Six Senses Kyoto.

The new addition to IHG’s urban collection is nestled among historic shrines and palaces of the ancient capital, offering guests a blend of holistic wellness and signature sustainability practices.

Six Senses Kyoto is designed to reflect the Heian period’s heritage, with a modern twist that incorporates traditional arts for a distinctive ambience.

Its 81 guest rooms and suites have been designed with drawing inspiration from the era, when Kyoto was Japan’s capital.

The speciality suites include the Premier Suite Garden with a private Japanese courtyard and the expansive 238m² three-bedroom Penthouse Suite.

Sekki, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, offers a weekly menu and drinks inspired by Japan’s 24 solar terms.

The focus is on a vegetable-forward menu that celebrates local, artisanal, and sustainable ingredients, alongside a selection of meats and seafood.

Chef Hiroki said: “Seasonality is a key concept in our culture that we celebrate through traditional events, nature, and food. We show appreciation for what nature gives us and, as an island country, we are blessed with an abundance of produce throughout the year.

“We incorporate this concept into our menu by working with local producers and artisans to provide ultra-seasonal produce that varies week-by-week. So, every time you visit Sekki, there’s always a moment of discovery and surprise in the dining experience.”

Café Sekki complements this with its range of fresh brews, craft teas, homemade kombucha, healthy juices, and natural sweets and pastries.

Nine Tails, the cocktail bar, provides guests with a selection of cocktails and non-alcoholic options made from artisanal condiments and homemade syrups and cordials.

The Six Senses Spa at the hotel draws inspiration from Kyoto’s Zen philosophy, combining traditional healing techniques with modern science for a comprehensive wellness experience.

Centred around sustainability, Six Senses Kyoto offers an opportunity for guests to participate in sustainability tours, and interactive workshops at the Earth Lab.

Last month, IHG entered a new management agreement with Samty KK to launch voco Hiroshima in 2027.
