Hospitality giant Marriott International has published its 2023 Serve 360 Report, highlighting data as of year-end 2022 and on its ESG [environmental, social and governance) efforts.

Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, guides the company’s efforts towards its 2025 sustainability and social impact goals. The platform was launched in 2017 in support of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

What ESG strategies is Marriott focusing on?

In April 2023, Marriott revealed the first 19 projects for its “Bridging the Gap” diversity programme, allocating $50m to increase hotel ownership among historically under-represented groups and $660m to achieve greater supplier diversity across the portfolio.

Since 2016 the company has trained over one million managed and franchised associates to recognise and respond to the signs of human trafficking – a key issue within the global hotel industry.

In terms of environmental strategies, Marriott is aiming to set a near-term science-based emissions reduction target and a long-term science-based target to reach net zero emissions by no later than 2050.

It has also transitioned to residential-sized bath products to prevent empty bottles from being sent to landfill and developed a programme for the installation of electric vehicle chargers across Marriott properties.

Marriott International president and CEO Anthony Capuano commented: “With our size and global scale, we recognise the part we can play in driving meaningful change, which we believe adds value for our business and for our customers.”
